The North Umpqua River near Roseburg, Oregon, creates many scenic opportunities to view sparkling, crashing waterfalls. Heading east along Highway 138 from Roseburg brings you to 15 picturesque falls you will love exploring. Here are a few of the best waterfall hikes in the area.
This 60-foot waterfall near Roseburg, Oregon, gets its name from a Chinook word meaning "hair of a woman." Visitors to the falls will see why, as the rock wall separates the streaming water into many tendrils. A 1.4-mile out-and-back trail leads to the falls. The hike is kid-friendly, and many visitors complete it in less than an hour.
Another Highway 138 waterfall you should check out with your family is Toketee Falls. A short hike, about half a mile long, brings you to a viewing platform where you can view the rapids. The last tier of the gorgeous, two-tiered waterfall plunges 80 feet over columns of basalt. At the base of the falls, a large pool collects the water from above. The hike also includes eye-catching scenery like old-growth fir, cedar, maple and yew trees.
A 0.8-mile loop trail brings you to Watson Falls. At 293 feet, it is the tallest waterfall in southwest Oregon. The hike has some elevation changes, making it more moderate but still doable with kids. Once you reach the falls, a wooden bridge takes you below the base and into the lower rapids, giving you a perfect view of the crashing tower of water overhead.
Susan Creek Falls is another beautiful waterfall on Highway 138 in Oregon. The falls are 50 feet high and flow over moss-covered rocks. The trailhead area also includes a day-use spot perfect for a lunch break and a rest. The trail to the falls is 1.5 miles out and back and has many interesting sights, like a beautiful wooden bridge. Experienced hikers can continue past the waterfall on a more strenuous hike to see Susan Creek Indian Mounds.
The hike to and from Fall Creek Falls is about one mile, meaning visitors can complete it in about 30 minutes. At the end of the trail, you see the base of a multi-tiered waterfall. A steeper, more challenging path brings you to a viewing platform at the second to last tier. It then continues to the top of the falls, where you can view the gorge you hiked through.
