Route 66 Baker's Dozen Stops along the Way. By Nancy Nelson-Duac From Chicago to LA more than 2,400 miles the route weaves through remarkable places with effortless formality. It is the road that inspired songwriter Bobby Troup's famous lyrics "get your kicks on Route 66...." Steinbeck called it Mother Road in "The Grapes of Wrath." Each section supplies a unique American portrait of spirit and tenacity with cafes and campgrounds, museums and parklands weaving an amazing collage of discoveries to be made. Most significant about Route 66, the friendly people willing to connect with travelers and improve the drive with stories and directions, insider tips and good wishes. In New Mexico at the Tucumcari KOA there are tire horses on the playground, bliss to a six-year-old. In Albuquerque there's an indoor hot tub, Kamping kitchen and a tent village. Holbrook Arizona KOA has provides pancake breakfasts and cowboy cookouts. In Williams a wooden Indian statue stands watch and guests can enjoy horses and hayrides. In California at the Pomona Fairplex KOA the clubroom is the community connection and the spa the perfect answer to relaxing after a Disney day. © 2003 Travel Communications, Inc. |
