Within a year the town grew to over 10,000 and became the Territorial Capital in 1865. Today, Virginia City's main street provides an exceptional example of commercial architecture from the later eighteen hundreds. Many of the original structures are filled with original artifacts. Be sure to visit the buildings in nearby Nevada City as well. Lewis and Clark Caverns -- CardwellTake a guided tour through this spectacular system of natural caverns, passageways and crystal-clear pools at Montana’s first state park. Tours are available May through September. Gates of the Mountains -- HelenaThe attraction gets its name from rock walls that “open” as your boat approaches. Guided tour boats offer access to the canyon. Original Governor’s Mansion -- HelenaAdmission is free. Tours are available April to Memorial Day (Tuesday - Saturday) Noon to 5 p.m.; Memorial Day through Labor Day (Tuesday - Sunday) Noon to 5 p.m.; Labor Day through December (Tuesday - Saturday) Noon to 5 p.m. The mansion is closed January through March. Tours begin on the hour with the last tour being at 4 p.m. Old Works Golf CourseThis course is Jack Nicklaus’ first “Signature Course” in the state.
