Or By Phone: (800) 562-0850 More Info: (402) 886-2249 Grand Island KOALocal Area AttractionsAnnual Spring Bird MigrationAnnual Spring Bird Migration (late February to approximately April 10 or so) -- Many birds migrate through our area, it is considered the "central flyway zone," and tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes migrate through, also (the Sandhill Cranes are the biggest attraction for birdwatchers from all over the world). Other birds migrating through include 14 to 16 million ducks and geese, endangered whooping cranes, prairie chickens, bald eagles, and more. There is a 250 acre Crane Meadows Nature Center (visitor center) and Interpretive Facility just outside of Grand Island. Also, thousands of these birds can be seen in the fields surrounding our campground during the spring migration time. ShoppingGrand Island has the Conestoga Mall (60 stores and four specialty shops), the Grand Island Mall (specialty stores and two discount department stores). Also, the historic downtown district houses 90 stores from antique stores, gift shops, clothing stores, jewelry stores, dining, etc.). Grand Island also has a Walmart, Kmart, Shopko and Sam's Club. Waterslide ParkIsland Oasis is a six acre complex that opens in late May each year. Hours are Noon to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Admission is very reasonable for a waterslide park. . .$3.50 to $4.50 per person. Stuhr MuseumThe Stuhr Museum is one of our nation's largest living history museums. Exhibits are from the 1860 to 1910 period in Nebraska history. Period rooms, tools, household articles and furnishings are displayed. The museum includes the Gus Fonner Memorial Rotunda which houses an extensive collection of American Indian Old West artifacts. There is also a 40-acre Railroad town which lets visitors experience the lifestyle of the early Prairie Town builders, see how they lived and discover our country's rich heritage. There are over 70 original shops, homes, barns and other structures. Campers visiting our area absolutely love the Stuhr Museum, so it is definitely a quality attraction. Fonner ParkA thoroughbred horse racing entertainment facility. The thoroughbred horse racing season runs annually from mid-February to mid-May. In addition to the live racing, Fonner Park also conducts nationwide simulcasting from all of the top tracks in the country (this runs year round, seven days a week). Fonner Park contains the Fonner Keno Casino and Sports Lounge. Fonner Keno features "live play" Keno seven days a week and conducts pari-mutuel wagering on nationwide simulcasting. Over 500 televisions are located throughout the facility. Hike and Bike TrailsThe new hike/bike trails are examples of the immense investment Grand Island has made in local youth and families. Crane Meadows Nature CenterCrane Meadows is one of the best places in the world to experience prairie wildlife, especially during spring migration. The Nebraska Bird Observatory (a private membership supported non-profit organization) provides programs and workshops, lectures and tours throughout the year.
