Meet Your Hosts

Coming to the Rice Lake KOA with hosts David and Mary Jo Nelson is a kid's dream come true. The Nelson's can't resist good fun, and each weekend they put together a different theme for the campers. Sometimes they throw in a wild ace and do something crazy.

"Recently we had chocolate pudding mud wrestling for the kids. In June we do a chocolate slip and slide for them," Mary Jo said.

The Nelsons love people. Before they purchased their KOA in 2000, they frequently took camping trips. "We like camping people and we like the idea of hosting these kind of folks," Mary Jo said.

They previously owned an independent fundraising business, but looked to own a campground for its compatibility with their lifestyle and interests. Mary Jo said they never considered another campground system because "we wanted the direction and name recognition from KOA. We didn't want to reinvent the wheel again."

The Nelsons are proud of their campground. "It is an absolutely gorgeous piece of property," Mary Jo said. A lake with great fishing sits on the campground and is a wonderful getaway.

The Nelsons take their fifth wheel camping for the winter months and often find themselves heading south to visit their grandchildren.
